Report of the Field Visit to Jiangxi Orphanages

By Zhou Bo - September 21-26, 2005

On September 21-26 Amity's Zhou Bo and Yang Xiao made field visits to orphanages in Yingtan, Hengfeng, Shangrao and Nanchang in the Jiangxi Province.  Their report from each orphanage is below.

  A Visit to Hengfeng...

Foster Care Project:

During this trip, we visited eight foster families. We found these families to be honest and traditional with respect to raising the children. Almost all of the children who receive sponsorship have some type of disability. The foster families give the children very careful care.

Regarding high blood lead for the children in Hengfeng, they explained that it is a regional problem. The way they try to improve this is by providing the children with Nestle milk formula and making sure that the children receive enough nutrition in their diets.

School Tuition Sponsorship:

We visited the No.2 Middle School to see two students.

YT is in grade 3 and XJQ in grade 1. YT hopes to attend clinical school after graduation. We bought some books and dictionaries for the students as gifts.

  Needs at Hengfeng:

Education.  LZQ has been attending Jiangxi Medical College since March 2005. The tuition is about 1960 RMB per year for three years. Some children in foster care will be able to attend kindergarten next semester.

The stroller walkers they are currently using in the orphanage are poor.

The orphanage has applied for better quality stroller walkers for the kids living in the orphanage.
