Creating a New Neighborhood at NanChang SWI:

We’re still working with the NanChang SWI, Holt International and Childhood Friends on an exciting new project.  Holt International announced that the new Love of the Heart Group Home Complex building has been completed!  The apartment building will house 36 older orphanage children and youth, overseen by 6 house-parent couples in 6 apartment homes.  It will be on orphanage property, but will give these young residents a much more natural and healthy home-like atmosphere. 

With your support, Holt staff members have already purchased solar water heating systems, air conditioners, televisions, dish sterilizers, refrigerators, dinnerware and cookware for the six apartments.

We believe strongly in this project.  This gives us yet another way to create a neighborhood atmosphere on the orphanage grounds.  We’ve agreed to help raise the necessary funds to furnish the apartments and provide sponsorships (i.e. – basic living expenses) for the children who will join their new families there.  

Contributions to the Group Home Complex are welcome in any amount.   Most or all of the 36 children are now being sponsored to cover basic living expenses (US $420 annually per child).

Medical Needs in Nanchang:

There are now at least 30 children in the Hepatitis B unit in Nanchang.  To prevent the spread of disease, all children and staff members in the orphanage have been immunized.  The children who have already contracted the virus have been receiving two types of Chinese herbal medicines, but the medicines have had little effect in combating the disease.  The doctors there have no answers at this point.

Better nutrition is being provided, but medical aid is severely needed to help these children.  If a western-style doctor who would help these children could be found, then further testing, treatment and medicines might be able to turn this situation around.

HYP, (below) an infant girl born on 8/27/03, was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate.  Her first surgery will be to correct her cleft lip.  We've received a donation for this surgery - Thanks!

Yi Qingyong is now over four months old. At first glance, he seems to be a very healthy young boy, but he is rather sick. Since birth he has been infected with a cytomegalovirus and hepatitis which, along with swelling of his brain, has caused some partial brain damage. Qingyong’s hepatitis has already been treated, but he needs medical sponsorship to receive treatment for his brain ailments, which appear curable with an aggressive course of treatment. The cost of this treatment is expected to be rather expensive, so we are applying for medical treatment sponsorship. The total estimated costs for the entire treatment will be around 18,000 RMB

Special Request - Fighting Hepatitis B in JiangXi Province:

We continue to need to raise funds to be used both in the prevention and treatment of Hepatitis B in the orphanages that we're helping.  Currently, reports indicate that enough vitamins are being provided on a regular basis.  So, now we'll be able to expand our Supplemental Nutrition Program to provide milk for these kids.

We've been asked to provide $469 every three months to provide milk for the Hep B+ kids in several Jiangxi Province orphanages.   Please contact us if you'd like to help and mark your donation for our Supplemental Nutrition Program.

Our Amity Foundation partners have been very successful in placing Hep B positive kids in foster homes during the last couple of years.  Other kids are benefiting greatly from being under the care of Amity Hugging Grannies every day.  Our 2003 Hugging Granny Conference placed an emphasis on the prevention of the spread of infectious diseases in the orphanages.  In addition, Amity doctors make regular visits to the orphanages and foster homes.

Children being placed in the Amity foster care program, whether they test positive or negative for Hepatitis B, need the testing and vaccines.  And, so do the foster care families, so funds are needed for this.  In the Spring of 2002, Amity began routinely testing prospective foster care families for Hepatitis B and inoculating all family members if they tested negative.  We'll continue to need funds for this.

Amity staff members are also acting as advocates for the children.  They are insisting that the children be allowed to attend school even when uninformed school staff are reluctant and we're providing their tuitions.   So far, we've raised $3,500 for treatment, and are still looking for viable options in this area as research continues.

We're hoping to be able to help in additional ways in the future (hopefully medications and improved medical care) as funds become available and opportunities open up.   Please contact us if you'd like to help.
