| Reading
is such a fundamental element in learning about life. We believe
that every child should have the chance to explore the wonder of
books.
Most of the orphanages in China don't have funds available to buy many books for the kids. We're changing that... |

In 2001 we received funds to buy books for
the kids in the orphanage in Gao'An.
The funds were given to the Amity Foundation and workers there purchased and delivered a wonderful selection of books for the children. As you can see, the kids were enthralled with the books and their caregivers were given a new development tool. |

In Shanghai, Altrusa volunteer Judy Payne raised funds, purchasing wonderful children's books and distributing them to six additional orphanages. Judy's son got his student council involved and they funded funding enough books to start libraries in six orphanages! Judy started by establishing libraries at the orphanages in Jiujiang, Guixi, Yichun, Ganzhou, Nanchang and Ruijin. |

Recently, more funds were raised in the U.S.
and books purchased for the orphanage in Xinyu.
You can see how excited the kids are when they receive these new treasures! |

Students in the orphanage in Shangrao also
received some wonderful new books.
Here they are putting them to good use in their classroom. |

We hope that by starting a small library of books in as many orphanages as possible, that it will become a tradition for adoptive parents to carry some with them when they go to receive their child. Books in Mandarin can be used by anyone over the age of twenty, such as the Hugging Grannies, to provide "story hours" for groups of children. And, books in Simplified Chinese would give the children a chance to build their own reading skills. |
