The Emma Lee Minkin Memorial Fund was founded by Betsy and Josh Minkin in memory of their daughter Emma.

Betsy and Josh join us in strongly supporting the Amity Foundation's Hugging Granny program in the Jiangxi Province.

Through this program, we can provide the additional nurturing, medical care and education not otherwise available in understaffed orphanages.

Below is a letter from the Minkins, describing their views about our efforts...

Dear Reader,

This fund is in memory of our daughter, Emma Lee Min, who died at the age of 17 months after a sudden severe illness.  It is dedicated to supporting the Hugging Grannies program. We see this fund and the Hugging Grannies program as a way to continue the goodness that Emma brought during her short time in this world.

Emma spent most of the first year of her life at Mother's Love Orphanage, a privately funded institution outside the city of Nanning in Guangxi Autonomous Region.  There she received excellent attentive care, first at the orphanage and later with her foster family.

The extent of caring at the orphanage was demonstrated when we toured the orphanage several days after adopting Emma.  The presence of a group of strangers in the room upset several of the children and they started crying.  Immediately, a caregiver swooped in and scooped up two crying children from their cribs, then scooped up two more, sat on the floor with one child in each arm and two on the floor between her legs and proceeded to comfort them all.

The Hugging Grannies program allows children in less well-funded orphanages to receive the same kind of additional caring attention that they need.  For a more detailed description of the Hugging Grannies program please visit the Work with the Amity Foundation section of this site.  There you'll find photos and biographies about a number of our wonderful Granny volunteers.

Emma's name in Hebrew is Nechama which means comfort.  We hope that your support of this project will bring comfort to many children in China's orphanages.

Thank you,

Josh and Betsy Minkin
