Shown above are four of the first children to be taken to the Shanghai Children's Medical Center to receive evaluations and/or surgeries in 2001. The number of infants and children in Jiangxi Province orphanages needing corrective surgeries for congenital heart disease is growing.  Previously, we  partnered with Gloria's Place of Hope, but unfortunately they no longer have funding available.

Currently, we're working to raise funds to provide urgently needed surgeries for additional children.  Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to this project or if you are aware of a foundation or nonprofit organization who might be willing to partner with us here and/or in China.

We'd like to thank all of you who continue to support us in these efforts!

A Toddler Girl in Ganzhou Orphanage Needs Heart Surgery

"ZXX", who lives in the orphanage in Ganzhou, was born in March of 2001 with a congenital ventricular septal defect and needs heart surgery.

The doctors suggest that another exam be conducted in October of 2003, so that they can make the final determination about whether surgery is indicated.  Normally in these cases, surgery is necessary at some point.

A Little Boy From The Ruijin Orphanage Needs Heart Surgery

"JLX" is an orphaned boy born in March of 2002 and residing in the orphanage in Ruijin.  He was born with both a ventricular septal defect and tetralogy of fallot and needs heart surgery.

After a recent exam in April of 2003, it was determined that surgery should be scheduled as soon as the SARS epidemic has passed, to avoid the risk of contamination in hospital.  JLX is on an enhanced nutritional program at the orphanage.

Update 8/18/03 - We've received enough contributions from www.eQuilter.com through our Donate by Shopping program to fund this surgery!   JLX will be scheduled for surgery as soon as the summer heat subsides, so that there will be less of a chance of wound infections.

Update 11/16/03 - Doctors recently determined that his disease is advanced and they are worried that he is not strong enough at this age to defeat the danger during and after the surgery.  They suggest that we wait until he gets to be 5 years old.  So the funds that were going to be spent on his surgery will be held for the next child that needs heart surgery.  We’ll also see if we can get his records and test results sent to an the Gift of Life organization here in the U.S. that has expressed an interest in providing some heart surgeries.  They arrange for the complicated cases to come to the United States.

In Memory Of A Little Boy From The Xinyu Orphanage...

Yu Zhi Huan was a four-year-old orphaned boy, born in February of 1999, from the orphanage in Xinyu.  He was born with a congenital tetralogy of fallot defect and needed heart surgery.

Thanks to a generous contribution from Paul and Luana Rubin, owners of eQuilter.com, Yu Zhi Huan received heart surgery at a hospital in Nanchang in  November of 2003.

We're very sad to share the news that although the doctors did everything that they could do, Yu Zhi Huan couldn't be saved.  He passed away in the hospital a few days following surgery.  Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and tried to help this little boy.  He was an important part of our very large family and he will be missed.

Yu Zhi Huan had been placed in an Amity Foundation sponsored foster home.  We share the grief of his foster family and would like to express our gratitude that he had a loving family there with him.

Tuesday November 18, 2003 will be a day of remembrance for Yu Zhi Huan.  We're asking everyone to take a few moments on this day and join us in our resolve not to ever give up on any child who needs our help.

With your help we can raise funds for more life-saving surgeries...

Again, we already know of other children who won't make it without these life-saving surgeries.  We need to raise funds now, so that we can be ready when the doctors determine that the need for the surgeries is imminent.

The approximate cost for a Tetralogy of Fallot surgery at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center is about $5200 - $6000.  Costs vary, depending upon the type of surgery and care needed.

Altrusa Foundation would like to help by providing needed badly needed exams, surgeries and post operative care for the children.   And for those children that need to come to the U.S. for their surgeries we'd like to pay for the transportation costs for the child and their nanny.   If you'd like to make a donation for this project, please make your check out to the Altrusa International of Longview-Kelso Foundation and specify that your donation should be directed toward "Heart Surgery Fund".

Donations can be sent to:

You can also use your credit card to make a donation online through PayPal (a 1.9% fee will be charged).  If you'd like to do so, just go to www.PayPal.com and send donation to the Altrusa Foundation using the e-mail address of peggy@gurrad.com.

We're all very hopeful that we can get these kids the medical attention they need.  We'll keep you posted on this page, as to our progress.  Any additional funds received will be held as emergency funds in our general medical fund.

Thanks Very Much,
