Every child deserves to have a loving home, family and individual attention.  Motor and speech development improve.  The child learns how to form attachments and trust in other people.  Infant mortality rates drop.  And when a child becomes a part of a local community, their chance for adoption increases greatly.
Legislation passed in China in April of 1999 is allowing more Chinese families to adopt a child.  Placing a child in a good foster care setting can definitely change their life forever.

Currently, we are sponsoring 279 children from orphanages in the Jiangxi province in foster homes.  The Amity Foundation monitors each child that we sponsor very closely.  They require that the orphanage staff member in charge of overseeing foster care visits each family regularly once a month.  Amity standards are high in terms of health, developmental and financial guidelines.  Any foster family not meeting those standards is discontinued from participating in the project.  The children are also taken to the orphanages once a month for a medical health exam by Amity doctors.  Amity's Dr. Wong and other staff members spot check foster homes during their regular field visits and report back to us.

In some foster care situations in China, infants must be removed from foster families and returned to the orphanage at the age of one year.  This is done to make room for new infants, because foster care has proven to reduce infant mortality rates.  The orphanage directors know that this is difficult for the little ones, but orphanage resources are limited.  For example, currently there are at least 300 children over the age of one year who are under the care of the Nanchang Social Welfare Institute.  Their chances of being adopted are diminishing rapidly.

By providing enough additional foster care sponsorships, Amity can require that children remain in their foster homes unless they are adopted or until the family is not able to continue fostering.  This would ensure that each child would have a "family of their own".  Below is Amity's Dr. Qiu (fourth from left) with some of our Amity sponsored foster parents in Jiujiang.

You Can Give a Child a Family of Their Own

The cost of Amity foster care sponsorship is $396 per year.  Since all of Altrusa’s work is done by volunteers it’s much easier for us if the $396 for the year can be donated up front, or $198 initially followed by another $198 in 4-6 months, but other arrangements can be made.  $33 per month is a small price to pay to change a child's life forever.  New sponsors are needed most months.

Occasionally we won’t have any children in need of a sponsor but would assign you a child as soon as one is in need, which would usually be within one to two months (often less).  We want to stay at least 3 months ahead on support, to ensure continuity for the children, so you will be notified about three months before your support runs out to find out if you’d like to continue your sponsorship.  If you'd like to help, please contact us.

Please Note: The cost of foster care sponsorship in Nanchang only for some of the special needs children, is now $588 per year or $49 per month.  The other orphanages, and the healthier children at Nanchang, will remain at $33 per month.

We also need sponsors who can donate in any amount to our Foster Care Medical Needs Fund.  We're concerned that many of the special needs children in foster care will have additional medical expenses, that might pose a major financial burden to their foster families.

Group Sponsorships Are Also Available

Some sponsors have formed groups of four to sponsor a child, which is a wonderful alternative, too!  Let us know if you'd like to be a part of a group!

Group sponsors each pay for their portion of the year's support.  In most of the Jiangxi orphanages, the cost of foster care for each child is $396 per year, so each of these children have four sponsors who donate $99 each.

Please Note: The cost of foster care sponsorship in Nanchang only for some of the special needs children, is now $588 per year or $49 per month.  You could have six sponsors in your group to fund one of these children.

We'd like to encourage everyone to participate in whatever way is the most comfortable for you.
